The Know-It-All Commission

Posted 12-06-07

A Treasure Island City Public Works employee went before the Treasure Island City Commission during a recent Commission meeting and requested he be given permission to purchase a SUV and two new pickup trucks to replace the current trucks which were creating major maintenance problems due to age and use.

The request was straight forward enough as the spokesman cited a need for four wheel drive so that the trucks could be used on the beach and the need for a larger cab size in order to transport more workers at one time. The truck would also be used to pick up parts for other machinery to keep down time to a minimum which is difficult when waiting for deliveries. The price quoted for the trucks was arrived at by using the State bidding list.

Commissioners Collins and Bildz began asking why did the City need to replace the trucks? Why did they have four wheel drive, didn't we have enough four wheel drive vehicles in the City's fleet? Why did the trucks have cruise control and power windows? Why did workers use the truck to pick up parts when they could be delivered? Why have a larger cab, couldn't workers be transported back and forth two or three at a time instead of paying for a large cab so all could go in one trip? Why do you need tires, fenders, etc. etc. etc.

By the time these two Commissioners who by the way voted to spend $100,000.00 on a library located in another city were done nickel and dime-ing the purchase request our City is now the proud owner of the new truck pictured below.

But look at all the money they saved to buy even more library cards.
