The Chamber of Whose Commerce?

Posted 04-08-08

Business in Treasure Island is bad enough but it is about to get much worse after the Exective Director of the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce told a Channel 13 news crew that she tells Treasure Island visitors to go to John's Pass if they are looking for something to do.

Dominique Reiter, who failed last year in an attempt to unseat Treasure Island Commissioner Phil Collins, was interviewed by a television news crew about the up coming vote by Treasure Island City Commissioners on whether or not to fund a completion of a study for the redevelopment of downtown Treasure Island. When asked by the news crew about Treasure Island's downtown Reiter said there was nothing to do in Treasure Island and she tells people who stop by the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce office to go to Madeira Beach's John Pass Village.

It is unclear how sending people to John's Pass Village helps the Treasure Island business community the Chamber is suppose to represent.

Reiter's tenure as Exective Director of the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce has been less than spectacular. When the City Commission decided to axe two of the City's main civic events, Rock Around The Clock and The Sun, Sand and Symphony, Reiter told the Commission that the Chamber would sponsor and run both events.

Since that announcement Rock Around The Clock has died a quiet death and long time traditional Memorial Day Weekend celebration, Sun, Sand and Symphony has been shrunk down to something now being called Sun, Sand and Swing.

It looks to us that Dominique is doing quite the job on the Chamber of Commerce rather than for it.
