Last Place In Spelling Bee
According to the Webster Dictionary:
Bascule
bas·cule
Pronunciation: 'bas-(")kyül
Function: noun
Etymology: French, seesaw
: an apparatus or structure (as a drawbridge) in which one end is counterbalanced by the other on the principle of the seesaw or by weights
According to the City of Treasure Island:
bsacle or
basucle
Pronunciation: bridge that goes up and down
Etymology: Budweiser, 12 pack
: it was free so don't complain
If you happened to be at the bridge grand opening on August 25th, then you might have noticed the nice dark green polo shirts being sported by several of the dignitaries. If you looked even closer at the shirts you would have noticed something interesting.
Apparently the City of Treasure Island is so proud of it's new bascule bridge that the City didn't want their bascule bridge confused with any other bascule bridge in the world so the City has taken it upon itself to change the spelling of bascule in order to differentiate it's bridge from all others.
The green polo shirts I spoke of had embroidered proudly on the left upper chest "Treasure Island Bsacule Bridge". After the spelling mistake was discovered by several residents with a better understanding of how to spell than the individual responsible for the final product, new shirts were made up and distributed.
If misspelling a word on a celebratory shirt is embarrassing enough how about misspelling the same word on a City website.
That's right, if you've been to the City's bridge construction website:
www.ti-causeway.com, you'll notice a similar gaffe. Towards the bottom of the site a line states "Grand Opening of the Basucle (Draw) Bridge on August 25, 2007".
So what is it? Bscaule? Basucle? Or Mr. Webster's Bascule.
My money's on Noah.
Now, I realize that there are those of you who are going to go over this website word by word and try to find spelling mistakes. I can guarantee that you will probably find several errors so I am prepared for the flood of letters pointing out each and every misspelled word.
After all, if you can't take the heat, get out of the ketchen, or is it kitchon, or maybe kitchen.
