Drum Circle Myths

In an effort to clearly explain the drum circle phenomenon that has turned Treasure Island's beach into an aluminum recycling collection center, the Editor of T I Beach Bums has scoured the internet searching for any good reason to allow Treasure Island's version of this activity to continue. Our Editor visited several drum circle websites promoting the benefits of the constant beating upon the skins of dead animals stretched over buckets. Below are listed several advertised benefits of beating on drums while standing in a circle and the reality, as we see it, of these so called benefits.

"Drum circles are a high-quality, rhythm-based event for community building."

That's right ! Public urination on the beach with friends while swaying to the beat of the drums is a great way to bring Treasure Island together. As a matter of fact, why don't we start all city events with the whole community standing side by side while relieving themselves on the sea oats.

"Drum circles are dedicated to bringing the power of rhythm to different groups in order to empower them with the ability to create beautiful music, regardless of experience and training."

I too have experienced the power of rhythm emanating from the Treasure Island drum circle when the incessant pounding has ended my quiet Sunday evenings outdoors forcing me and my neighbors to retreat to our closed up, hurricane shuttered homes in order to escape from the beautiful music. While we're at it. Why don't we play recordings of drum circles on airliners. That way we could easily identify any terrorist because only someone who has been promised eternity with 72 virgins could stand to fly.

"Drumming connects us with the perpetual rhythms inside our own bodies."

Of course the connection is made stronger by large amounts of alcohol and illegal substances. If those rhythms need to be relieved simply walk up to the nearest stand of sea oats and connect with nature. The Treasure Island City Commission could legalize marijuana just like they have legalized speeding.

"A relaxed sprit enables our mind and bodies to enjoy this thing we call a drum."

Once you get good and loaded, then feel free to jump into any of the swimming pools located behind the many motels located within staggering distance of the circle. Simply ignore the "No Trespassing" and "Pool for guest use only" signs because you have elevated your spiritual being above the law.

"A drum circle or rhythm circle, simply put, is a group of people gathered into a circle for the purpose of making music with percussion instruments."

No, a drum circle has become a weekly meeting venue for many who use the occassion to get drunk and stoned not to mention spewing empty beer cans and other trash across what is on Sunday afternoons one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

Bottom Line
